Jingle Bells Chords: The Chorus

The “Jingle Bells” chords for the chorus goes like this:

If you’re a true beginner on the guitar, these are great chords to practice together because they appear together in songs all the time.

  • You can get through these “Jingle Bells” chords by strumming each chord once while you sing the melody!
  • Each chord symbol in the chord charts stands for a certain amount of time playing that chord.
  • That amount of time is called a measure, and a measure correlates to a certain number of beats.

In “Jingle Bells,” that number is four, so each chord symbol stands for four beats.

That’s why there are four Gs above the first line of lyrics, and each G is placed over the lyric you’re singing when the new measure starts.

The easy version — why just 2 chords?

It is true that the most satisfying arrangements of this Christmas song will have 3 or more chords (the I, IV, and V chords, and perhaps the V of V), not just 2 as I have in this version.

However, for a VERY new beginner, 2 chords to worry about is enough!

My newest students use the «small C» and «small G7» (see my Big Guitar Chords page) in Jingle Bells, and the song sounds just fine.

Plus, the guitar tabs melody has lots of open string notes, making this song very easy to pick for a beginner, once they understand how tablature works.

Uh-oh… they have to change strings!

Well I didn’t say that the melody will be easy for a new flat-picker! Changing strings as it does, a beginner will probably struggle with it at first.

Tips on how to learn this song

Concerning the melody, there are only five notes used in the choruses: B, C, D, G and A. In the verses, E and F# are used as well. These are the seven notes in the G Major scale. Thus, the song stays in the same key throughout and don’t use any notes outside the key.

Also notice that the melody in the chorus only make use of two strings. The melody of the verses make use of four strings, which makes the verses somewhat harder to learn.

Jingle Bells Chords: Other Options

Fun “Jingle Bells” fact: Today we learned that the original “Jingle Bells” chords weren’t the chords we know and love here in the 21st century!

The original “Jingle Bells” melody was set to the same chord progression used in Pachelbel’s “Canon in D.”

This installment of “Today I Learned” has been brought to you by Wikipedia!

So far, we’ve been talking about Jingle Bells chords in the key of G, because they are fun and easy to play.

Perhaps however, the key of G is not your cup of tea because those chords are not fun for you, or because it is not fun for you to sing “Jingle Bells” in that key.

Here are a couple tips for getting the song into the key that you like:

History about “Jingle Bells”

“Jingle Bells” goes way back, having been around for over 150 years. The song was written by American songwriter James Lord Pierpont in the 1850’s and was originally titled “The One Horse Open Sleigh”. The song’s first public performance was in 1857 at Ordway Hall, on Washington Street in Boston, Massachusetts.

“Jingle Bells” didn’t become a Christmas standard until decades after it was first performed on Washington Street. Some area choirs adopted it as part of their repertoire in the 1860s and 1870s, and it was featured in a variety of parlor-song and college anthologies in the 1880s. Its popularity was growing, and it was first recorded in 1898 before becoming a Christmas favorite in the early twentieth century.

It has become one of the most performed and most recognizable secular holiday songs ever written, now famous worldwide. In recognition of this achievement, James Lord Pierpont was voted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970. With all this heritage, it makes it the perfect tune to practice on those winter evenings.

So let’s get jamming!

Transposing Jingle Bells Chords Without A Capo

There are plenty of ways to arrange these Jingle Bells chords in and out of the key of G.

Converting the key of G chords we are using into numbers, G is the I chord, A7 is the II chord, C is the IV chord, and D is the V chord.

  • Turn another of the guitar-friendly letters of the musical alphabet into the number I, arrange the musical alphabet accordingly, and you have another key to play in!
  • For example, if you choose the key of D, then D is the I chord, E7 the II chord, G the IV chord, and A the V chord.
  • Substitute those chords in and you have Jingle Bells chords in the key of D!

This is not an exact method of transposition, but it works well enough with the guitar-friendly keys C, A, G, and D.

With E, the other guitar-friendly key, you have to use an F#7 instead of an F7 for reasons best explained by your ears, or this amazing guitar lesson: Music Theory for Beginners: The 10-Step System for Rapid Progress.

Transposing Jingle Bells Chords With A Capo

Got a capo? It is the easiest way to get Jingle Bells chords from the key of G to the key you’d like it in.

If the key of G is too low for your liking, try putting the capo on the second or third fret, and keep moving up until you find the key you like to sing in.

  • If the key of G is too high for your liking, try putting the capo on the fifth or seventh fret.
  • You’ll be singing lower than you’re playing, which is a common trick of singer-songwriters like Lyle Lovett and Paul Simon.

By transposing with a capo, you have the benefit of putting the song in a different key without having to learn or play any different chords.

The Jingle Bells chords in the key of G work exactly the same way if you use a capo.

69 bpm.

«Nothing else matters»

В 51 т. дёргаем C и A.

  • There’s no need to work at memorizing your holiday music – plenty of people bring holiday books to holiday jam sessions, caroling excursions, and party performances.
  • You’ll find that with frequent repetition, your fingers will memorize the Jingle Bells chords before you know it. Get away from the paper as soon as possible!

Check with your local nursing homes, children’s programs or day cares, senior centers and residences, and pubs or bars to see whether they’d like to have you over there entertaining people during the holidays.

Practice with a purpose! Many places love to have you volunteering to play for them during their group activity periods.

Jingles in outer space

It was also one of the first songs to broadcast from space, in a Christmas-themed prank by Gemini 6 astronauts Tom Stafford and Wally Schirra, in December 1965. Amazingly, they smuggled a harmonica and sleigh bells onboard to perform it, which you can hear in their radio transmission to Mission Control.

In conclusion, “Jingle Bells” may be a familiar holiday song, but it has a rich history and a firm standing in popular culture. It has also been translated into many different languages, recorded by many famous artists, and it holds the distinction of being the official state song of Massachusetts, in a nod to the origins of its songwriter.

Jingle Bells Chords: The Entire Song

Whether you’d like it short and sweet or an extended dance party version, these “Jingle Bells” chords and lyrics are everything you need to make your personal arrangement.

Here’s a chord sheet, together with alternate verses.

To decide on a rhythm for your arrangement, decide how fast you’d like to play and sing “Jingle Bells.”

Some people play “Jingle Bells” with a swinging, bouncy rhythm, using the guitar to imitate the sound of the bells.

Some people play it with a straighter rhythm, using the guitar to drive the song faster, imitating the speed of the sleigh.

Thinking about which role you’d like the guitar to play – the bells, the sleigh, the horses, the snow, the laughing – can often suggest a rhythm.

Here are some examples.

Michael Bublé’s drummer sounds like horses’ hooves.

Frank Sinatra just goes ahead and uses sleigh bells. Classic!

Ella Fitzgerald’s drummer is using a snowy-sounding ride cymbal, punctuated by the bell tones of the piano’s upper register.

Herb Alpert’s introduction is a windy chorus, contrasted by the racing sleigh sound of the rhythm section.

Pro-Tip: Can’t decide on a rhythm? No sweat!

Trivia for Jingle Bells

Now it’s time for some trivia! As we touched upon earlier, the song was not originally intended for Christmas. In fact, it was written to be performed at Thanksgiving celebrations. Towards the end of the 19th century, it gradually became associated with Christmas.

The song has been translated into several different languages. In French, it is called “Vive le Vent”, which means “Long Live the Wind”. In German, it is called “Kling Glöckchen”, which means “Ring Little Bells”.

“Jingle Bells” has been recorded by many famous artists too – Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Johnny Cash, and Frank Sinatra are just a few of the artists who have put their own spin on the classic song, and it continues to be recorded to this day.

Key of the Song

The original key of the song is G major, but as it often happens with popular songs, the key of the song may be adjusted to suit the preferences of the singer or the level of mastery of someone on an instrument. You may use a capo to ease the transposition of the music.

When doing research for this article I also came across a few different versions of the song, as far as chords employed is concerned. Some of them more elaborate than others. The simplest one features a I IV V7 in the key of G major. The more elaborate one includes a borrowed chord from a related key (D major), in this case an A major or A7 (V/V) which leads nicely to the last chord of the progression, D7.

In the easy version you’d have the following structure:

Verses:

I – IV – V7(G – C – D7)

Chorus:

I – IV – I – V7 (G – C – G – D7)

The harmonically „richer” version features a new chord in the chorus:

I – IV – I – V7/V – V7(G – C – G – A7 – D7)

Perhaps the trickiest chord out of them all will be G major. I say “perhaps” because this depends on the age of the interpreter. Refer to the following article on G Chord and the Key of G.
